As the nation prepares to commemorate America250, Plain & Fancy Farm is offering a grounded, hands-on way to experience the traditions that continue to shape Lancaster County.
Held on the third Saturday of each month from June through September, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Homestead Days brings together local heritage, craftsmanship, and family-friendly activities in a setting that feels both educational and approachable.
A Closer Look at Lancaster County Traditions
Throughout the day, guests can watch demonstrations that reflect everyday life in earlier generations. Skilled horsemen share traditional horse care and washing techniques, while a working blacksmith shapes and fits horseshoes using time-honored methods.
Families will find interactive experiences across the farm, including a scavenger hunt, historic yard games, and a classic face-in-a-hole photo board. These simple activities offer a way to engage with the setting while creating lasting memories.
Each month also features rotating artisans demonstrating traditional skills such as canning, leatherwork, and farming practices. Many offer hands-on components, giving visitors the opportunity to try these crafts firsthand.
Guests interested in learning more about Amish culture can explore exhibits and conversations centered on schooling and daily life at Amish Experience (see their website for details and tickets), providing helpful context for understanding a community rooted in long-standing traditions.
Buggy rides with Aaron & Jessica offer a guided look at the surrounding countryside and, when available, include a visit to a working Amish farm. Book your buggy ride in advance online.
Stories Shared Through Art and Experience
On select dates, Elva Hurst presents her well-known chalk artistry program. Combining storytelling with detailed illustrations, her presentations explore themes of history, faith, and Plain culture, unfolding visually as she speaks. The theme for this special ChalkTalk is “Happy 250th Birthday America!” which will explore defining moments of America.
Local Flavor and Seasonal Favorites
Food traditions are an essential part of the experience. At The Barn & Hearth Shop, guests can sample regional specialties that highlight Lancaster County’s pickling and preserving heritage, including chow chow and fruit preserves.
Just steps away, Smokehouse at Plain & Fancy Farm offers a convenient place to sit down for a meal, while baked goods like whoopie pies and shoofly pie are available for a quick treat.
Most Homestead Days activities are free, with only select items requiring a small fee. Programming may vary depending on weather and availability, so checking ahead for the latest details is recommended.
For those planning an overnight visit, AmishView Inn & Suites is located adjacent to the farm and offers easy access to the event.
